Setting Achievable Goals

Well I've been thinking about setting attainable goals before the end of the school year and I've managed to draw a line that I think I can meet. I've decided to work on a map for a particular game mode, not entirely sure which one but it will be a continuation of my earlier works gm_rathen. Rathen of course was a small eye-candy map, it merely resembled some 5 hours of work and it was only to test a concept out. Today I've been looking over my finals and exams and I've been trying to devise a good way of ending the semester, and I believe that by finalizing the map, I will not only ease the burden of having to come up with a map made entirely from scratch under a different concept, but also be able to bring up the quality of the map to the standards that I would like to see in my future projects.

In case you don't know what the map is, it's available for download on Garrysmod.org and ToyBox.

Photos of forgotten places

Went urbexing this weekend, I thought it was a lot of fun, can't wait to do it again.

I also got a lot of inspiration for my maps, more to come anyway.

Mapping #2

So it looks like the buildings went over well; I was asked to lend a hand for more of the project, which is nice. I spent the whole day on a new section of a complex, mainly the cafeteria and kitchen. It took a long time to get the brushwork right but it seems to have turned out alright.

I still have a good ways  to go with the lighting, but for the moment, this is the most finished area in the building and it's probably time to work on the other areas.

Mapping #1

So I didn't have time for much but I decided I would help a friend out with some commission work. I'm kind of happy with the result considering I only had 5 hours to do it. If there was more I could do to make it better, it probably would have been including some more models and make custom textures (the picture only contains cs:s textures).

Overall I think I should be practicing more, as I'm not as fast as I used to be.

Alchemy

I stumbled upon this open drawing tool called Alchemy. It uses computational methods of drawing, alongside traditional ones, to create endless forms and shapes. Of course this isn't entirely useful for creating finished products, but this tool offers a quick and easy way to establish a starting point for digital painting, whether it be characters, creatures, environments, or just abstract.

The above picture is a combination of the 'speed shapes' and pressure shapes tool, and it produced a collage of shapes with an interesting aesthetic. I'd suggest you check it out if you have trouble gathering inspiration from a blank canvas, like I do.

Digital Paint Practice

I didn't have much time to paint so I drew a quick cloudscape to warm up. Blending a monotonous colour scheme is very simple and quite effective.
